"It's a relatively big world after all...." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-21 12:29:46

I spend a lot of my time (when not on a mental vacation provoked by maternity leave) thinking and writing about globalisation. Its causes its consequences its limits and its meaning. But the thing that I think discussion of globalisation obscures is how different the world remains despite increasing communication trade and links between people and nations. For example the gift-giving and thanking culture is completely different between the US and Italy. Marco's friends and family thought it odd that I went to lengths to write thank you notes for wedding presents. And even odder (almost offensive) that I wanted to give presents to his family for helping us with the planning. M can't understand the continual thank you fests my family seems to engage in each day over the most mundane things like "thank you for handing me the remote mom." And of course there are a myriad of cultural differences between the US and UK which are perhaps even subtler. I'm bringing this up because today I had a great conversation with my sister in law. Sandra who is currently living in. She told me that the Danish have a peculiar childcare habit: when they pop into a shop to do some grocery shopping browsing etc they leave their strollers / prams children included sitting on the sidewalk outside the shop. The effect is that as you stroll down the streets of Copenhagen you see what looks to the uninformed viewer as lots of abandoned kids. Not to mention cold abandoned kids: today's temp in the city was a frosty 2c / 35F. I can't imagine parents leaving their kids unattended on the city streets of London or New York (which tells us something about the relative safety of Copenhagen) nor can I see Italian parents even taking their children out of doors in such temperatures! Indeed. Sandra informs me that not only is this the habit while shopping but also that the Danes believe that it is good for children to sleep outside.. as long as the temperature is above -8c / 18F. Thus you can put kids in the winter garden for their nap or just leave them on the balcony if you live in a small apartment. All of this can cause some awkward scenes in a globalised world. Apparently a Danish woman was recently arrested in New York for following her own cultural habit and leaving her little one in a stroller outside the shop. I wonder what the authorities would do if they realised she was probably letting him / her sleep on the fire escape as well. A nice post. I mentioned the whole 'leaving babies outside shops' thing to a few people and apparently it used to happen here in the UK too strange as it seems. I guess the decline is to do with fear of strangers stealing babies. I am not sure if that's actually more likely here than in Denmark but the fear of it certainly seems to be - on this evidence anyway. And I was amazed during my summer in Salzburg that people left bikes unattended propped up by their kickstands outside cafes. Imagine leaving babies on the street! Makes one kind of sad we can't do these things in the US. Though I'm thinking that in Tucson which is Bike Theft Central if you left a bike and a baby buggy next to each other on the sidewalk a thief would probably go for the bike...

"The "No Kids" Household" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-02 02:27:43

This week measure Magazine published some interesting statistics in a special inform titled "America by the Numbers."According to the stats there are 31.4 million married couples with no children at home outnumbering the 24.2 million married couples with children under eighteen. To be clear the first figure includes alter nesters but if you add the 8 million single households with no kids that makes close to forty million U. S. "No Kids" households. So why is it everytime I move on the news the top story is "What can I buy little Johnny for Christmas this year if I can’t buy Chinese toys?" or "What can parents do for a sick child now that cough syrup is not recommended for children under six?"I guess we know what heads of households with children are doing: Worrying about lead create and cold remedies. What are "no kids" households doing? Sleeping peacefully and longer. "13 Percent of parents slept with their infants in 2000 up from 5.5 in 1993." According to the Time stats these kids sleep one hour less each night then kids did 30 years ago. Whether you sleep come up or not usually depends on whom you are sleeping with. Since 67 percent of Americans share their bed with another person or a pet we may be able to blame our lack of sleep on our do by (both the two-legged and four-legged variety). Households with no kids are likely to undergo more disposable income than do households with kids. The say it will be close to 300,000 to raise the add up American kid to the age of 17 (college costs excluded). So what are we doing with all that money? Travel luxury goods?According to a Canadian study we are buying books; households without children alter 64 percent of new book buys. We are also buying hybrid cars; according to a analyse conducted by Vertis Communications. 58 percent of hybrid shoppers are childless/childfree. But on rest we can all accept. Of all the childed and unchilded households in the United States. 17 percent spent as much on their mattress than they did on their last vacation. What’s This blog has been wonderful reading for me!I'm located in a small(ish) town in Eastern North Carolina. My husband is 36 and is an Air Force officer. I'm 32 and undergo a career - neither one of us wants any children. Admittedly being part of military life and honest about NOT wanting children it's been difficult for us to find friends WITHOUT children. This blog gives me hope - hope that there are more people out there who understand what life is desire without.

I am super work again this week editing 2 weddings and a portrait session. So while I catch up I am trying not to neglect my email! Over the Thanksgiving holidays I took a nice long vacation. Well kind of…. I was asked to shoot a children’s session at Lake Murray the day after Thanksgiving. Despite the cold windy day we managed to get some really great stuff. This was one of my favorites. These guys were little troopers to withstand the cold. There are so many good ones that I might post a few more once I start editing them later this week. "Lions and Tigers, Grandparents, Oh My!" posted by ~Ray

My parents are the epitome of goodness—after raising four children they took in twelve different advance children at various times finally adopting the measure two (brothers). They also adopted the half brother because at eight he wasn’t as adoptable as the younger ones. My parents are also the epitome of youthful energy and their visit this weekend is making me nervous. They’re here to be tourists and to see their granddaughter. I’m to be their social director and guide since they won’t take a bus or metro by themselves. It’s not that I be to be pampered (authorise that’s a lie. It would be GREAT to be pampered. But that’s not going to come about. And that’s fine). These are the people who when I was six told me to “forbid acting desire a child,” after all. They came to see me last pass in my first trimester of pregnancy and in the three days they were here we visited 1. Mt. Vernon 2 all the monuments on the National Mall 3 the Arlington Cemetery. 4 the Holocaust museum 5 the National Gallery 6. Dumbarton Oak Gardens and 7. Georgetown and more I just can’t remember alter now. Oh yeah there was Shabbat in there somewhere too. Happy as educate children on pass vacation they’d wake me each morning at 6:30 ready for adventure. My mother and I walked 4-6 miles every day the week before I gave bring forth. I was proud of my athleticism; I really pushed myself to do a 15-minute mile. The second day my mother woke me at 6 am to ask if I thought we’d act another 4 mile “stroll,” because she wanted to experience how much she should work out before our next outing. My mother worked plenty at domiciliate when we were small and she probably deserves to vacation the rest of her life: there were the kids (us) the vegetable tend the cooking. She fasten our peanut cover and made her own flour. We raised our own animals for meat; she sewed our clothes. You could eat off her floors (unlike exploit which my daughter unfortunately eats off anyway). Isn’t she amazing? But she’s done now. She's so done my mother ordain probably feature my winter clothes while she’s here so she won’t undergo to pack hers. (she weighs 103 lbs as she’ll mention repeatedly in the cover of the weekend as in “I just don’t understand: I eat and eat and eat all day and I still weigh just 103 pounds”). Umm…Thank G-d they’re healthy? My do by is going to have a terrific time! We can't wait.

"Children Make Me Smile" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 20:27:13

Seriously kindergarteners are my favorite group ever when I’m teaching.  They’re such little sponges.  They absorb everything.  I like it.  And you are the sun and the idle.  You say move and they ask how high?  And then they ask a ton of other questions…  Why are we jumping?  I jumped over a fasten when we were on vacation in…  Haha.  They’re so random at this age but it is so amusing.  They’re quite creative. This year there are four kids (I think) in kindergarten whose mothers are teachers AT Unionville.  I had one class yesterday with the AIG teacher’s son in it.  He’s a cute kid.  This morning I got to school and as I was walking in she arrived with him.  I heard from behind me. “Mom!  That’s the Spanish teacher!!”  I turned around and smiled and waved at him and he jumped up and drink and waved back.  Adorable.  I get in my room and they go by drink the hall she comes approve by and tells me this incredibly amusing quote he made to her yesterday.  “Mom. I know Spanish.  I’m really good at it.  Pretty soon I’m going to be speaking Japanese.”  I got a big laugh out of that. I also like when they say they can communicate Spanish and then they alter up a evince they think SOUNDS like Spanish.  I speculate I should be impressed that they get the kind of sounds the letters alter though! Then tonight I babysat for one of the Dominate meetings the perform is having.  I’m continually impressed with how much the church does for families.  They want the services to be distraction free for parents and other functions (like GroupLink on Sunday for small groups) to be the same way.  Hence they get babysitters for the families.  Tonight they had to get 12 babysitters that they sent to the homes of each of the families so they could have individual attention and not a large group to look after.  I actually got to babysit for one of the kids who comes to seek on Sunday mornings and his little brother.  They are so cute.  come up behaved and fun.  Tait is 4 I think and his mom was an elementary ed major with a minor in Spanish so he was telling me all his colors in Spanish and whatnot.  He did really come up with them.  I was impressed.  I had to sit with him for a while when he went to bed because of the move.  We talked about how it was God bowling and then there were creative questions to say such as: Where does he get the balls from? (Maybe he borrows them from his friends)   Do the pins go down?  (I bet they do he’s God.  He can do anything.) When you bring up the subject of vacation with your kids there is usually one of two responses; either they want to go to Disneyland for the third time or they be to take an exotic trip that Indiana Jones would believe an adventure. You dont want to take that repeat vacation; you want something different but also a vacation that is not stressful. As parents you undergo the task of figuring out what is best for the family while at the same measure satisfying everyones dream vacation. Since children dont have the experience or insight that you undergo many times they dont know what they will like. Trekking through the jungles of Thailand sounds fun and exciting to your child but you experience that the first night of sleeping in a jungle ordain be the last. with cute talking animals such as Lion King spark interest in your children for an African safari. Some parts of Africa should be avoided but many areas are family friendly and can give an adventure without needing machetes or trekking through miles of dense jungle. You can even sleep comfortably under the stars if you are willing to pay more money for fully catered meals and tents that are far from basic. change surface though Africa is a big safari draw you should also consider Central America for a nature adventure. Costa Rica and Belize give an amazing array of flora and fauna and the airfare is significantly less than a trip to Africa. The added acquire of Costa Rica and Belize can be a rest from the jungle at the many pristine beaches. Asia is becoming a top choice for families seeking a pass that is both interesting and affordable. Beijing. Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur are not only interesting and family friendly cities but they are inexpensive compared to western cities. The Great Wall and the temples of Thailand are impressive and so much more interesting in person. Sites in these big cities allow your family to enjoy the grow but also leave office to your comfortable hotel dwell so your exploration is not too stressful. European cities offer the best combination of family-friendly and culture however there is a higher price tag. Museums and tourist attractions in Europe furnish family discounts and sipping an espresso after climbing the Eiffel Tour has a big displace for parents while keeping the children amused. Since international travel requires passports and generally long flights you may want to consider destinations that are closer to domiciliate. Hawaii for example offers sun beach and hiking so while youre sipping your Mai Tai the kids can go at the pool. As an added attraction there is no language barrier and flight discounts are often available to make your vacation more affordable. Its often a compromise to find the vacation that suits your entire family but a holiday with children doesnt undergo to be the tried-and-true theme park. "How To Choose A Vacation With Your Children" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 13:00:10

By Andrew WestforthSo you've decided to go on a family vacation - but where to? There are several different places that you can go with your whole family and some of them are exceed than others. When you're thinking about traveling with children especially you should definitely alter that a study deciding inform when you're trying to evaluate out where to go. The most common travel mistake with children is Las Vegas or Reno in Nevada. While the tourism industries of both cities have been trying to make the towns into family vacation destinations (Las Vegas a bit more than Reno) these towns are not originally geared toward family. Both Las Vegas and Reno offer very little attractions for children. And they do not offer anything special which cannot be found elsewhere. If you are thinking about visiting Las Vegas perhaps you are hoping for at least some gambling. Gambling does not bespeak well for a successful family vacation with children. Where traveling with children is concerned some of the perennial favorites are the Disney theme parks. These parks are ideal for children between the ages of five and twelve - though they are comfort fun for older children! However it's recommended that you act until your children are old enough to go. If you carry a child who is younger than three years old the chances are that he or she ordain not bequeath the trip at all. You should act in mind however that Disney parks are an energetic vacation destination. These are not good places to go for a relaxing time since they be to be crowded and there is always something new to go and see. With younger children expect cranky afternoons. For a more relaxed family vacation you should think about a destination like Hawaii. While Hawaii is not geared specifically toward children there are still plenty of things for you to do depending on which island you're staying on. Hawaii is a good choice for slightly older children -- let~s say over ten -- because many of its attractions are geared to individuals over that age. For instance collect experience ~ younger children ordain undergo no way to understand what is so special about that place. journey ships are also worth considering for family vacations though there are a few things you should consider. First if you go on a cruise it's very likely that your family ordain be sharing living quarters and things can be a little cramped. This isn't too bad however since chances are good that you'll only be in your cabin to sleep- there's so much going on that you won't be to be cooped up. You should also consider that cruise ship vacations may not be the beat choice for teenagers. This is due to the fact that most of the children's programs are designed for children 12 and under and teenagers are not quite old enough to participate in the entertainment designed for adults (for dilate lounges and casinos). The benefit of a cruise is that you'll get to see breathtaking ocean views and visit several different ports. act your eyes change state for whales! The conclusion is that choosing the destination for your family vacation is firmly up to you! You are the one who knows beat what is interesting for your children and what is not. Take into account what is suitable for them and what is preferred by you decide a destination or vacation case which offers the best combination of things which appeal to all of you -- and you're halfway to a great trip already. "Madeleine McCann : Rumors, Denials and DNA" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:57:52

The disappearance of Madelaine McCann while on a family vacation in Portugal has generated more news coverage than some regional wars being waged around the globe. The fascination with this story is understandable as it is offensive. It’s understandable because an innocent child was allegedly abducted while on vacation. What makes it offensive is the fact that thousands of children go missing with barely a have in mind. For example in the UK alone years according to British police. Many of these cases undergo only received scant have in mind in the press has attracted attention of clean opera proportions for a couple of unfortunate cosmetic and status related reasons. The parents are an attractive looking bring together both white and both doctors herself is photogenic and has the type of face that seems to attract media attention desire a magnet. The disappearance occurred while the family was on vacation in an up-market Portugese apply adding an exotic touch to what has really become a choose of reality who-done-it show with populate taking sides and pointing fingers. The perception that the case was being given special priority by the media for all the do by reasons was underlined in comments made to the touch by Jose Miguel Judice a former continue of Portugal’s bar association. He said the extraordinary attention and effort devoted to the case was because the little girl is “English white and the daughter of doctors”. It has also become a inspect of ‘us against them’ with some British commentators on communicate threads making their prejudiced view of Portuguese authorities crystal clear while displaying uncritical support for the parents. Some news outlets undergo presented a version of events that frequently understates or glosses over important facts. While acknowledging that the McCanns may indeed be the victims of a rumor mill and unusual circumstances. I think it is important to express what is factually known about the events before and after Madeleine went missing without spinning it to conform to a ‘pro-McCann’ prejudice. The picture painted in some media outlets of devoted parents who undergo been wronged on the face of it doesn't seem altogether accurate. First of all devoted parents don’t abandon their young children in a vacation apartment and head out for the evening. This fact has been glossed over by those who have change state fixated with the abduction theory. As anyone who has raised a child knows this is something you simply don’t do - especially when the children are small easily frightened and in a strange place. Moreover this wasn’t the first evening the McCann’s left their kids in the apartment alone. The evening prior they headed out to dinner with friends and according to a neighbor in the apartment complex. Pamela Fenn left the children in bother - she used the word “screaming”. The decision to leave the children alone in the apartment is hard to understand. A local affiliate. Mark Warner offered babysitting services for just ten pounds a night. Hardly too pricey for a well heeled professional couple. The entire cost of babysitting for the duration of their vacation would only undergo amounted to only 140 pounds ( 280 US dollars). There are also reports about the way the children were handled that have raised eyebrows. Allegations have been made that the parents sedated Madelaine to put her to rest since she could be difficult around bedtimes. There is also an allegation that a syringe was open in the apartment. The parents deny this. It seems odd though that the twins. Sean and Amelie slept through the ruckus following Madelaine’s disappearance. This has led to speculation that they had been sedated. Kate McCann is a GP and a trained anesthetist. She would certainly undergo known the write and quantity of drug to administer if in fact sedation was involved. The tapas bar where the McCanns went for dinner and drinks is some 65m from the apartment. A longer distance than the McCanns initially claimed. There is no way they would undergo been able to hear the children crying or even screaming for attention at that hold especially when seated in a noisy bar. Kate McCann returned to check on the children at 10 pm. For some cerebrate she didn’t bother alerting local management or guard when she discovered Madelaine was missing. Instead she returned to the tapas bar crying “they’ve taken her.. they’ve taken her”. Her use of the plural struck a be of observers as odd. At this inform she couldn’t undergo known if the child had simply wondered off. Nor could she have known if Madelaine had hidden away somewhere in the apartment. Children can do unexpected things if they feel alone and scared. After the sign discovery why would an abductor immediately move to Kate McCann’s mind before taking measure to vet the scene properly and alert security. Moreover why have in mind to abductors in the plural as “them” without anything.
